About the Author William Shakespeare was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon." His extant works include some collaboration, consisting of about 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and a few other verses, the authorship of some of which is uncertain. I bought this particular version of the complete works because it seemed to be the most straightforward - I didn't want any notes, annotations, or other things to get in the way, since I was getting it for pleasure reading in preparation for a Shakespeare course next semester. I bought it used, since it was less than $20 (great for a nearly broke college student), and I was amazed when it arrived. Other than the spine already being broken (which is preferable, new books are annoying to open) and very slight scuffing on the top two corners of the cover, it looks pristine. The text inside is a bit small, but easy to read in a two-column format, and like I expected, relatively free of slipped in add-ons. The top of each page has the work currently being read, which is helpful for me, personally. It's also amazingly gorgeous with gold edges, a gold bookmark ribbon, ivory pages, and inlaid red and gold designs in the black leather cover, and I can see myself holding on to this book for many years.
