Reviews
This collection from Reading Time, titled EPIC POEMS ANTHOLOGY, is identical in content to Golden Deer's previously issued collection titled CLASSIC EPIC POEMS COLLECTION VOL 1. While content is the same, there are two major differences between them.(1) The Golden Deer edition does not have an active TOC (but on a Kindle Paperwhite, the GO TO function lists and provides direct access to all titles); this Reading Time edition DOES have an active TOC.(2) The Golden Deer edition identifies the translators of those works in it not originally written in English; this Reading Time edition does NOT identify them. That very significant omission has caused me to rate an otherwise 5-star collection, one star lower. For your information, the ILIAD and ODYSSEY were translated by Samuel Butler (in prose), the AENEID was translated by H. R. Fairclough (in prose), and the DIVINE COMEDY was translated by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. While there is nothing exceptionally wrong with either Butler's or Fairclough's prose translations, in a collection whose title draws attention to these being epic POEMS, there is some level of incongruity demonstrated by using prose renderings. One would have expected these titles to also appear in poetic formats -- as do the others -- since public domain versions in verse DO exist for them; immediately coming to mind are Alexander Pope for the ILIAD and ODYSSEY and James Rhoades for the AENEID.Be that as it may be, these are handsomely-formatted, very readable, and all well-worth reading inasmuch as each one is a true classic of literature. (Be aware, however, that they are all available individually in free, public domain editions should you choose to obtain them that way.)
